General Form 706 filing rule

IRS instructions generally require Form 706 to be filed within nine months after the decedent's date of death. If there is no numerically corresponding date in the ninth month, the due date is the last day of that month.

A Form 4768 request can generally provide an automatic six-month extension of time to file, but an extension to file does not automatically extend the time to pay estate tax.
